Tucked away on Third Street close to downtown Manhattan, is a small jazz club and restaurant aptly called Blue Note. For the last twenty five years this place has been carrying the torch for jazz. Just like me. Set in the very heart of New York – in Greenwich Village, Blue Note has become one of the premier jazz clubs in the world and a cultural institution in itself.
I am a die hard fan of their Sunday Jazz Brunch that gets Jason to taxi me down in six minutes to the venue from my condo-pad in Manhattan. But tonight I am not waiting for it to be Sunday. Tonight 8 pm onwards David Sanborn will be playing his fluid saxophone along with other musicians. And I will be dining to his mellifluous sounds.
David Sanborn is well known to jazz lovers and others as one of the greatest saxophone players of all time. He is an artist whose music has inspired countless musicians while creating a body of work that has spanned the genres of rock n’ roll, R&B, pop and jazz. Sometimes you do need a late night groove to keep you from ebbing away.
This naturally gifted performer has helped redefine saxophone’s modern sound while influencing a generation. And I have been an ardent fan since God knows – many many years. Well certainly he is going to there for the next few days or so I am told. But an opening night is an opening night. Ah yes – he is slated for the Sunday Brunch too. Just some simple pleasures for an old man enjoying the end of his days. I love my Manhattan.
